Why some symbols stay unchanged
A symbol may come from another font, fall outside the mapping, or use a different Unicode approximation. Select the right font first. Both text and emoji variation selectors are accepted. Unknown characters are preserved and counted.
Decoding a Word document
If the symbols are ordinary letters displayed using the Wingdings font, changing the font back to a text font can reveal the message. Copying from Word may give you those original letters rather than Unicode symbols.
